Happy New Year
Greetings and Happy New Year, to all the now over 3000 subscribers to Frugal Retiring News...
Above is a picture taken in our house a couple weeks ago... right before Christmas, of yours truly and two of his most favorite people in the world... My bride now of 43 years... I know I'm used to the looks of astonishment when people wonder how I ended up with such a catch...
And my mentor, that turned 96 on December 30...Dr.Robert H Mounce, now of Anacortes Washington... And if you take the time to Google him...you will discover that he is a scholar, author of countless books, former college president, but unfortunately, has friends of dubious character...me.
We had a great visit with Bob and his lovely wife Rachel... We look forward to seeing them in Washington in September.
Frugal living tip number oneI would like to start off my frugal tips by pointing out that even though 2017 was such a great year, in regards to the economy , with more indications the 2018 will be even better... Do not get away from the basics of frugal living.
Look at the increases, in your 401(k)s and IRAs, as well as your paychecks, as a bonus to make your retirement even more secure... I can assure you that our spending habits are not going to change, and I would encourage you to keep on being frugal as well.
Frugal living tip number twoThere is only one magazine that we pay for a subscription, Consumer Reports... And I recommend that you consider subscribing as well.
The February issue headlined 43 ways to pay less for practically anything, longtime readers of this site will find most of these subjects were covered on site, many years ago, for instance…
Car buying tips...Forget the value added department
CR also had a list of 8 things to never skimp on...I think they missed a big one...your bed...you spend a third of your life on one get the best you can buy.
Frugal living tip number threeOne of the things that I know is on the horizon, is getting another car, I didn't say a new car it will most assuredly be a used one... Let someone else take the depreciation hit in the first to three years of ownership.
You may say what do you know about buying cars... Just because I haven't bought one for 20 years...?
Our 1999 Lexus RX 300 is getting close to the 300,000 mile mark, and I certainly hope that I'm wrong about needing another car in the next few years. But...
If you find yourself in the market for a used car please be aware that there were over 650,000 cars new and old that experienced water damage in Houston alone with the latest hurricane.
DO NOT buy a car... Especially one that looks like a deal too good to be true... Without a Carfax and a trip to a mechanic that you can trust that know how to check for water damaged vehicles.
Frugal tip number fourThere are 377 pages on site, started in 2009..lots of folks are amazed at how many pages they miss by not hovering their mouse over the navigation at the top of each page.
For example...when going to... Where to retire...go down to Arizona retirement...then over to Arizona cities...and see if you can locate the page on Surprise, where we live.
Every time you see a > symbol to the right of a link...repeating look for a > symbol...that means there is more pages if you follow the > to the right.
to save you some time, here are pages you can visit only by clicking Frugal tips...go down to Frugal Living and then to the right.
Happy New Year to allFor those already living in Arizona, you know that we have set record high temps for November and December and are on the way to another great January.
Still plenty of room down here in the Grand Canyon state.Come on down.
God bless you all,
Gary and Julie Pierce
