Frugal Retiring News, Issue 40, September 2012
September 22, 2012
It's below 100...kind of
We had a few days of less than hundred degrees so that means that fall can not be too far around the corner...hope your weather is nice as well.
If you are in the Midwest and suffering for the drought all I can say is we are praying for some relief... I cannot imagine what our farmers are going through with the drought conditions.
Frugal tip for the month...number 1With the price of gold being what it is you may want to look around your jewelry drawers and see if you have anything that can be converted into cash.
Yesterday my wife and I went to a jeweler who we trust... let me stop right there, a good jeweler is right next to a good barber or hairstylist and car mechanic in my estimation of critical services that we all should have.
At any rate I found that I had a gold necklace, a gold bracelet, and a gold money clip that I have not worn or used for at least 25 years.
It probably looked great in the days of John Travolta and disco mania... but it's kind out of place right now.
Our particular jeweler said that he had not sold any jewelry like that for several years... and he has many items on consignment.
With gold selling for over $1700 an ounce, we walked out of his store with a check for $1000.
So take a look around and see if you have any unused items that you can turn into cash.
My wife and I do not have family that we would leave jewelry and whatnot in our wills... if you are in a similar situation and don't want pass along personal items... you may want to take a look at turning them into cash to use them on the things that are important to you.
In our case it's taking cruises which we really enjoy.
Frugal tip for the month...number twoI recently filled out an application with Lending Tree...with interest rates the lowest in our lifetime... we have refinanced three times in the last 30 months and saved over $200 a month our house payments.
I would highly recommend you go through the process as well...
We currently have an interest rate of 4.375%...the first two brokers that responded to our application... which only takes 1 to 2 minutes to fill out, on the above page... offered a 30 year fixed mortgage at 3 1/2%...
This will save us over $100 a month...
Although underwriting requirements have changed, there are lenders that will qualify you for a low rate with a 2 to 1 ratio of provable income to the monthly mortgage payment.
In plain English that means if you are trying to borrow $1000 a month you have to show an net income of $2000 a month in order to qualify.
This $2000 a month is a net figure if you subtract anything like car payments or any other installment payments that you are obligated to... I sincerely hope that you have zero in this department because of the interest rates that are charged on car loans these days.
So at the risk of being repetitive if you have not gone through the exercise of seeing if you can refinance you are missing out on the easiest way to reduce your monthly outgo...
So please take the time right now to visit the above page and fill out the application with Lending Tree...you'll be glad you did.
New things on siteYou will notice on the left-hand side of all my pages... right below the mission statement a square box that allows you to stay up-to-date with any new pages on frugal retirement living.
It is the orange dealy with RSS at hte top of the box.
If you use Google, Yahoo etc just hit the button and you'll be notified of anything new on site.
Or you can go to...
the blog page on site... it shows the very latest new pages or pages that have been modified on-site.
You may want to bookmark the page.
Frugal tip ...number 3If you have never cruised with Princess cruises before, and are thinking of a cruise... if you would email me before you do... you can save $25 a person.
Here is the language on the Princess site:
"Refer your friends and relatives and reap the rewards.
Refer your friends and relatives to Princess and for each new customer you refer both you and your referral can receive a $25 discount off of a future Princess Cruise.
Be sure that those you refer have not previously booked or sailed with Princess.
We regret that we are not able to accept any referrals for current Princess customers. This includes those who have previously booked, booked and cancelled, or sailed with Princess.
Please note that in order to qualify for Referral Rewards a successful referral must be made prior to your friend or relative making their booking."
If you're thinking about taking a Princess cruise...if you follow the above you get $25 a person taken off your rate, in addition to what other discounts may be offered... by emailing me before you make your booking.
There is no obligation to you if you do so.
I obviously recommend Princess cruises very highly.
The healthy tips are on siteFor those of you that have not received my free e-book.... listing our number one way to save money...(hint...it is eating or preparing the majority of your meals at home)... and the subsequent email course on healthy eating and weight loss tips... I am putting the tips up on site.
I am putting the tips up one by one... you can find them by going to Lifestyles... then to baby boomers... then to boomer health tips
Here is an example...the page I put up on grocery shopping.
I have got several positive comments about how easy the new top down navigation makes it easy to get quickly to any page on site.
The old site design had a long list of links on the left side of the page... and 80% of the pages could only be accessed after clicking on one of the links on the left hand side of the page.
Now you can dig down and get to any page on site... above the fold... on any page.
Any Pinterest fans out there? My good friends at Site Build It have come up with a new tool that will allow you to pin pictures from my site that you think might be of interest to your friends... look for the PINIT button next to the image.
In less than a year Pinterest has gone from 700,000 visitors per day, to over 37,000,000 million visitors per day... they are closing in on passing Yahoo.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about...
Site Build It never ceases to amaze me at the improvements and additions they make to their product... all at no price increase for the 3+ years I have used their product.
With a no questions asked 90 day moneyback guarantee, you should try them out if you have any interest in an online business.
It's the only business that I know of that allows you to work anywhere and anytime you choose.
You will need the 90 days anyway to absorb all the information that they supply.
How I support this siteThis site is supported solely by the advertisers that put their links images and text, on pages that are pertinent to their target audiences.
One of the more popular add-ons is Ad Blocker...which does not allow ads to appear when you visit my site.
If you use Ad Blocker, I would respectfully ask you to not use it on https://www.frugal-retirement-living.com...
As I put on my mission statement 99% of all websites you'll find on retirement are put out by huge financial companies which are trying to sell you something.
I don't give stock market advice on my site... you wouldn't want it anyway.
So give us a break, and support our advertisers, and don't use Ad Blocker... at least not on https://www.frugal-retirement-living.com
Guest post on our trip to IsraelI recently made a guest post, on the very popular Baby Boomer travel blog....http://www.myitchytravelfeet.com...
It was on our trip to Israel that we took last March
We found our trip to Israel to be wonderful and a lot safer than most people think... you may want to check it out.
Closing thoughtsHope this newsletter finds you well and staying frugal.
Your comments are always welcome and I would like to hear from all 2000 subscribers... if there is a subject you'd like to hear about let me know.
Until next time
All the best,
Gary and Julie Pierce
