Downsizing for retirement...don't say you can't downsize

Downsizing for Retirement

When we first retired 16 years ago we took downsizing to the extreme. You can do this...

We went from a 1,800 square foot, two story home...to a 35 foot sailboat with curved walls...about 50 square feet of stand up space.

It was easy...you have no idea how your stuff can control you and the wasted space that is in your home.

If your home has a formal dining or living room...when is the last time you used it?

Does your garage contain corners that you are afraid to stick your hands in?

You "need" very little space

You use certain places in your home every day...your bed , your favorite chair, the bathroom, and part of the kitchen.

Folks, the above is what you need...look at anything added on as non-essential.

Retrace your steps in a typical day...see how little of your house you use everyday?

How about...

With this perspective look at...
  • The small condo in Florida...it is cheaper now
  • The 1 bedroom cottage close to downtown...the theatre...the museums
  • Renting out the big house...moving to the garage apartment
  • The RV or sailboat fulltime

Conclusion

Moving to a sailboat is drastic downsizing...how is moving from a 2,000 square foot house to a 1,000 square foot cottage or condominium such a daunting task to some.

It should not be that difficult...and downsizing will greatly expand your retirement options from a budget and location standpoint.

You being in control is a good thing...embrace living in a smaller space.
